Born in Sochani village, Jammu District, in the princely State of Jammu & Kashmir.
Graduates from J&K University
Completes his graduation at the University of Jammu & Kashmir.
Commissioned into the Army
Passes out of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun — earlier the National Defence Academy (Military Wing) — with the 12th course as a Second Lieutenant, and is commissioned into the Punjab Regiment.
Service with the Punjab Regiment
Serves as a commissioned officer with the Punjab Regiment through the 1950s and into the early 1960s.
Counter-insurgency in the Naga Hills
Serves in the Naga counter-insurgency campaign — the first of the four conflicts he would see in uniform.
The Sino-Indian War — a turning point
The 1962 conflict inspires a lifelong commitment to the serious study and writing of defence and strategic affairs.
Joins the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles
Transfers to the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, successor to the historic State Forces whose history he would later write.

Serves through the 1965 war, by now an officer of the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles.
The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971
Serves through the 1971 war — the last of the four conflicts of his career. In all he spent eight unbroken years in the border and counter-insurgency areas of the country.
